Cardboard Boat Regatta 2008
Mark your calendar and gather your team and your supplies for LYF's Fourth Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta on July 26, 2008. What is a Cardboard Boat Regatta??? The Cardboard Boat Regatta challenges community members to design, build and paddle boats made of corrugated cardboard, glue, tape, and paints around a course. Whether you’re racing or watching, it’s always a thrill to see who will sink or float in their cardboard boats. Build a boat and challenge your friends or foes. Gain publicity or notoriety for your company, club or organization. Family fun, community spirit and creativity are the key words. Who would be so crazy as to build a boat from cardboard??? Hundreds, nay thousands, of Cardboard Boat Regattas have been held all over the country since the mid 1970s. Close to home, Fairfax County Park Authority has sponsored the Lake Accotink Cardboard Boat Regatta for almost 20 years. Races are held at Sailboat beach (near Clubhouse beach and the basketball courts). Boat Drop off at 11:30 am; Pre-race Award Presentations at 12:30 pm; Races start at 1:00 pm. Race winners in each category will receive awards after all races have been completed. Registration is $20 if paid by July 2, 2007 and $25 thereafter. Applications, rules and boat building tips are available HERE or at the Holcomb Building. Cardboard Boat Regatta 2006
What a perfect day we had on Saturday, July 29th for our Second Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. Over
200 people gathered to watch and cheer on 11 boats, constructed only of cardboard, glue, tape and paint. Who would ever have imagined that you could make a cardboard boat in the shape of a dragon, dog, aircraft carrier, and butterfly and really have them float. We have a lot of creative people here at the lake!
A special thank you goes out to Otis (aka Captain Dreadlock) for the fantastic job he did announcing our event and to our 3 judges Mimi Doan, Lee Moore and Doug Rogers. We sensed a lot of excitement in the crowd and are really looking forward to next year’s event! LYF is especially interested in feedback from participants and attendees that we can use as we plan next year’s regatta. To provide feedback or to be involved in the 2007 Cardboard Boat Regatta, please contact Diane Hileman at x8634 or info@lakeyouth.org. Cardboard Boat Regatta 2005
In between periods of rain, 300 people gathered to watch and cheer on 18 people paddling 9 boats made from cardboard, glue, paint and tape around Clubhouse Cove. Saturday, August 27 was the Lake Youth Foundation’s first ever Cardboard Boat Regatta, and paddlers ranging in age from 5 to over-60 proved that defying common sense can be a whole lot of fun!!
