Lake Youth Foundation

LYF held it's first Easter Egg Hunt in 2007 and has continued the tradition ever since. The event is held at Sweetbriar Park and, if the weather is bad, the festivities are held inside the LOW Community Center.  Children pre-register and are divided into three groups - ages 2 and under, 3 to 5, and 6 to 8. Typically, each child finds approximately 10 eggs filled with candy or stickers. The Easter Bunny has made an appearance for the last two years which makes for wonderful Easter photos. Snacks and juice are served during the hunt.

The Children's Fishing Tournament has been a very sucessful event since 1996. In 2008, under the leadership of Hank Lewis, LYF now sponsors this family fun event.  It is held at LOW's front entrance pond which accomodates approximately 150 children. Prizes are awarded for the longest fish, heaviest fish, and the most fish in 4 age categories - ages 5 & 6, ages 7&8, ages 9 thru 11, and ages 12 thru 14. Because of the tremendous turn-out each year, children must register in advance.

Each child is treated to two hours of fishing, a free lunch prepared by Clearwater Grill, a rod and reel, a participation trophy, and a bag filled with coupons, fishing supplies, and educational pamphlets. LYF would like to thank all of the donors and volunteers that make this such a special event.

The next Fishing Tournament will be on May 19, 2012.

What's better than watching a parade? Being in the parade! Each year, LYF has a float in the LOW Independence Day Parade which is usually held on the Saturday closet to the Fourth of July. LYF typically has one or more cardboard boats in the parade as a way to promote the upcoming event.  The children love to pass out candy and wave to all of the spectators.

LYF started this event in 2005 and now attracts hundreds of spectators. People are excited to watch their friends and neighbors sink or float in their very own cardboard boat. It is amazing what you can do with old boxes, tape, glue and some paint. Participants pre-register in the following categories - ages 10 and under, ages 11 thru 14, ages 15 thru 18, ages 19 and up, parent and child, and school/civic/scout/club/businesses. Pre-race awards are given for Best in Show, Most Likely to Float, Titanic (Most Likely to Sink), and the People's Choice Award.

Captain Jones (aka Otis Adgerson) emcees the festivities and races.  Food and ice cream are also sold at the event, as well as, free face paintings for the kids.

The next Cardboard Boat Regatta will be on July 28, 2012.

Each year, Santa pays a visit to the Lake of the Woods Community Center to take requests from all of the little boys and girls. Kids can sit on Santa's lap and get their pictures taken by Mom and Dad or other family members. Everyone can also enjoy some cookies and punch.  To minimize long waits, reservations are taken in advance of the event and is limited to 75 children.
